Top local football players honored by Touchdown Club

The Touchdown Club of Richmond votes on awards each year for the state's best college football players.

Those awards were announced this week, with the exception of the Dudley and Lanier awards for the state's most outstanding large and small-college players, which will be announced Friday night at 7:45 p.m. on CBS 6.

Among Division I schools, this year's winners were

• Quarterback of the Year – Alonza Barnett, III, James Madison University
• Running Back of the Year – Bhayshul Tuten, Virginia Tech
• Offensive End of the Year – Malachi Fields, WR, University of Virginia
• Offensive Lineman of the Year – Tom Elia, C, University of Richmond
• Defensive Lineman of the Year – Antwaun Powell-Ryland, Virginia Tech
• Linebacker of the Year – Joseph Carter, Liberty University
• Defensive Back of the Year – Jonas Sanker, University of Virgina
• Kicking Specialist of the Year – Aaron Trusler, P, University of Richmond
• Return Specialist of the Year – Jaylin Lane, PR, Virginia Tech

And for small schools, the winners were:

• Quarterback of the Year – Connor Barry, Christopher Newport University
• Running Back of the Year – Jada Byers, Virginia Union University
• Offensive End of the Year – Cam Abshire, WR, Emory & Henry College
• Offensive Lineman of the Year – Storm James, Randolph-Macon College
• Defensive Lineman of the Year – Wade Grubbs, DT, Randolph-Macon College
• Linebacker of the Year – Daniel Eliasek, Randolph-Macon College
• Defensive Back of the Year – Noah Martin, Chistopher Newport University
• Kicking Specialist of the Year – Kyle Ihle, PK, Randolph-Macon College
• Return Specialist of the Year – Brendan Robinson, KR, Bridgewater College

The club also has two coach of the year awards. This year those went to:

Bobby Ross Coach of the Year (NCAA Division I):  Russ Huesman, University of Richmond

Willard Bailey Coach of the Year: (NCAA Division II & III/NAIA):  Dr. Alvin Parker, Virginia Union University

The Spiders and Panthers both advanced to the NCAA playoffs in their divisions, with Virginia Union setting a school record by advancing to the quarterfinal round.
