Thousands of tax rebate checks sent out with incorrect names

The city of Richmond said in a Tuesday night press release that several thousand property tax rebate checks were mailed out this week with incorrect name information.

"Importantly, no taxpayer information has been released or compromised in any way," the release said. "The Department of Finance is in the process of cancelling and reissuing the affected checks."

The city signed off on the tax rebate for property owners in lieu of reducing the rate.

The proposal to lower the tax rate by 4 cents failed, with five votes against and four votes in favor.

“I sincerely apologize for this mistake and understand the frustration it may cause for our residents,” said Jamie Atkinson, Director of Revenue, in the release. “I’m working with my team to quickly rectify the error and will ensure that all affected checks are canceled and reissued with the correct information.”

The City said it will contact impacted residents to inform them of the error and provide additional information.
