Oct. 14 Newsletter: Read our voter guide

Weather: Fall arrives, with a high of 68.

On this date in 1954, Hurricane Hazel comes ashore in North Carolina. When it reaches Richmond it has winds of 79 mph, and blows the steeple roof off of Trinity Methodist Church on East Broad Street.

The Richmonder launches voter guide

With the election less than a month away, The Richmonder has launched a voter guide to inform people about their options and allow them to conduct research on the candidates and their views.

The voter guide will be updated throughout the election season, and is free for all to read, regardless of whether they are a paid member.

Two former PTA presidents seek 2nd District school board seat, differ on superintendent

In the first of a series of profiles of competitive races during this year's election, Sarah Vogelsong takes a look at the 2nd District school board contest between incumbent Mariah White and challenger Katie Ricard.

One major area of difference appears to be support for current RPS Superintendent Jason Kamras. White was part of a voting bloc that routinely opposed the recommendations put forward by Kamras, while Ricard indicated she would support another term for the superintendent, whose contract comes up shortly after the new board takes office.

City Council expected to approve $2 million for new Animal Care and Control shelter

Richmond's City Council meets on Monday night, and is expected to sign off on authorizing $2 million to purchase a building at 2310 W. Cary Street to serve as the new shelter for Richmond Animal Care and Control.

RACC Director Christie Chipps-Peters told CBS 6 she wants the building to include social spaces for residents.

🐾
“I want you to get a cup of coffee and come and sit with the cats. If you're having a bad day, think, I’m going to go and visit Richmond Animal Care and Control today and pet a cat or pet a dog,” she said. “We want it to be a community asset that everyone feels like they're in the neighborhood, you're welcome to come in and see us.”

Council is not expected to take up the real estate tax rate, after failing to come to a consensus during a Thursday meeting on the topic.

Three less-than-an-hour trips from Richmond to enjoy the fall weather

When the weather turns, Andy Thompson says he wants to be outside all the time. If that strikes a chord, you might enjoy these three adventure itineraries. None is more than an hour from Richmond. All are presented as overnight trips (because fall camping is the best, he says) but can be modified and turned into day trips. His options:

  • Paddle Powhatan
  • Hike Bear Creek Lake
  • Bike the Capital Trail

The editor's desk:

For me, last week finished with a visit to The Roosevelt in Church Hill, where I expanded my culinary horizons.

Sugartoads are not a frog, but rather a fish, and are known as the "chicken wings of the sea," which is good enough for me. After they're fried, they're eaten off the bone much like a wing. And they were tasty.

I'm excited to start the new week by showcasing our voter guide, which has information about every competitive race taking place this year. As we post our stories about those races, we'll update the guide as well. And a special thank you to our members, whose donations make it possible for us to provide that information to all Richmonderes.
