More than 8,000 remain without power in Richmond City after winter storm

More than 100,000 people in the Richmond area were without power at some point on Wednesday, as an expected snowstorm instead turned into several hours of icy rain.

According to Dominion Energy's Outage Map, as of 8:30 p.m., there were 8,275 customers still waiting to be reconnected in Richmond City, with a similar number waiting in both Henrico and Chesterfield as well.

"We are expecting a multi-day restoration effort due to the 48-hour duration of the storm and catastrophic damage in some areas of Metro Richmond and Southside," Dominion wrote on social media. "We encourage our customers to keep their devices fully charged and prepare emergency supplies."

The power company said it had more than 3,700 personnel working to return electricity.

"People are working throughout the night to make sure we get power back on," Governor Glenn Youngkin said in a video, noting that another storm is on its way this weekend.

Youngkin said statewide, more than 190,000 people found themselves without power at some point on Wednesday.
