No updates on his medical status were available on Wednesday, as the community began to process the news.
"I received a message from a witness shortly after it occurred and I biked to the scene while the police were still investigating the crash," Councilmember Andrew Breton wrote in an email. "I spoke with some witnesses and saw the bike debris and evidence of the trauma at the site. The driver remained on the scene and cooperated with the police.
"Neighbors were visibly shaken. People who might normally think 'what if this were to happen to someone I love' had to grapple with the fact that it in fact had."
Muzik is a beloved figure in the Richmond education community, and has served as the school's principal for three decades.
Supporters are planning a "Bike Parade" in Muzik's honor to show their support on Friday.
They plan to meet at 4:30 p.m. at Albert Hill Middle School, and ride together to Mary Munford. They are asking participants to wear red, the school's color.
"Show the city that we all demand safer, slower, pedestrian-friendly roads," the invitation said.
As of Thursday afternoon, police had not filed any charges, and the crash remained under investigation.
RPS Superintendent Jason Kamras released a statement on Wednesday.
“Greg Muzik is a tremendous school leader and a wonderful member of the RPS community who exemplifies what it means to Lead with Love, he wrote. “We're deeply grateful to our first responders and his medical team for their quick actions and care, and are in close contact with his family as well. RPS has a counseling team on-site, and our hearts and doors are open to all parents, students, and graduates. We're wishing Mr. Muzik a total recovery, and keeping his family close in our thoughts."
