Man shot by two Richmond police officers during Thursday evening traffic stop

Two Richmond police officers shot a man near the Fairfield Court neighborhood Thursday night during a traffic stop.
According to a release from the Richmond Police Department, the two officers were trying to conduct the stop in the 2600 block of Melbourne Street because the vehicle the man was driving had been reported stolen.
“During the course of the traffic stop, two RPD officers discharged their service weapon, striking the driver,” the release states. “Officers rendered medical attention prior to the arrival of emergency medical personnel.”
The man, who has not been identified, was taken to a hospital with injuries that were not believed to be life-threatening.
Police said the driver stepped out of the vehicle and ignored the officers' commands before turning away from them. He then "reached for his waistband" and "raised his arms towards the officer," according to police.
However, police found no weapon after conducting a search.
The shooting occurred a little after 7 p.m.
Both officers have been placed on administrative leave while RPD investigates the incident.
