In 2020, retailers were given a 5% sales commission rate on tickets sold, in addition to a 1% bonus on the cash value of winning tickets redeemed.

The Lottery reported in 2020 that outlets selling lottery tickets average "nearly $23,500" in compensation.

Virginia allows the purchase of lottery tickets by cash and debit card, but not credit card.
