City Council expected to approve $2 million for new Animal Care and Control shelter

Update: RACC posted that the item has been moved to the Nov. 12 City Council agenda.

Richmond's City Council meets on Tuesday night, and is expected to sign off on authorizing $2 million to purchase a building at 2310 W. Cary Street to serve as the new shelter for Richmond Animal Care and Control.

The funds will be diverted from the Commerce Road improvement project - state funding will cover that gap.

RACC Director Christie Chipps-Peters told CBS 6 she wants the building to include social spaces for residents.

“I want you to get a cup of coffee and come and sit with the cats. If you're having a bad day, think, I’m going to go and visit Richmond Animal Care and Control today and pet a cat or pet a dog,” she said. “We want it to be a community asset that everyone feels like they're in the neighborhood, you're welcome to come in and see us.”

Henrico County voters authorized a new $15 million animal shelter and adoption center during a 2022 bond vote that bundled the center with improvements to seven firehouses.

Council is not expected to take up the real estate tax rate, after failing to come to a consensus during a Thursday meeting on the topic.

A vote is more likely to take place at their next meeting, on Oct. 28.

This article was updated to reflect that this week's Council meeting is on Tuesday due to Indigenous Peoples' Day.
